Frequently Asked Questions

F.A.Q.

  • Can you help me find more teachers?

Yes! When you become a Partner Location with our TESOL program, we will actively promote your location to our entire network of teachers and graduates. And we will help you build a high-quality landing page on our main website that we'll use for recruiting teachers and connecting them with your location.

  • Will this course be a good fit for my teachers?

If you want to be a teacher who inspires students in your community or around the world, then this course is for you! This course is for training and certifying professional English teachers, specifically, but the skills practiced in this course transfer to all kinds of teaching, ministry, and leadership. If you or your teachers are looking for a way to support yourselves overseas so you can travel, then this course is for you too! Many of our graduates support themselves with paid teaching positions in schools and universities, while others have become ‘digital nomads’ teaching English online. And many other graduates use their skills as volunteers who are making a difference every day in whatever classroom or space they find themselves in.

  • What will the schedule look like for my teachers?

You get to decide! There is a lot of flexibility when it comes to interacting with the course and completing assignments. This course is self-paced in many ways, and this means that teachers can access the course platform at any time during the week. Your teachers can complete their studies whenever they have free time to do so, according to their preferences or the scheduling needs of your location. If they should to do their work in the morning with a nice cup of coffee, go for it! At night with some cozy lighting and their favorite study music? That works too!

  • How many hours per week do they need to study?

That depends on your location and how much time you can give them each week. This course is designed with working or part-time students in mind, and our goal is to make it accessible to students who volunteer their time elsewhere (including other work duties at your location), and for those who have jobs, have families, or have other responsibilities. Students can choose to complete the course in a few weeks or several months. In order to finish the course in 12 weeks, you should anticipate at least 10-15 hours of coursework each week. Students who need to take additional time to complete the course may do so, and they can finish the course in 12 months by working an average of 3 hours per week.

  • How interactive is the course going to be?

There are many different kinds of online courses, but we have strived to make this particular course as engaging and interactive as possible. Together, our staff team has decades of experience with traditional face-to-face courses and online courses at the professional and university level. Whenever possible, we’ve included the same kind of interactive activities in this online course that students enjoy in our more traditional face-to-face TESOL courses. And we can also give you resources and new ideas for facilitating activities and discussions with teachers at your location, to aid their professional development and make it 'come alive.'

  • What kinds of activities and assignments?

Each module consists of a wide variety of content that includes: short videos and reading assignments on each topic, interactive discussions, ungraded exercises to help participants check their own understanding, and graded projects to apply what they're learning and put it into practice.

  • Are there any age or academic requirements?

Anyone wishing to take the course must be 17 years of age and have completed year ten of secondary school. There are no other academic requirements for attending TESOL. (Students who do not yet meet these requirements can still access the course and complete the modules, but may not receive full credit until they have met the age and academic requirements.)

  • Do teachers need to be native English speakers?

No. Many of the teachers in our program are not native speakers of English. If you are hoping to recruit native speakers or non-native speakers, then we can certainly help you recruit and train both. We feel that some of the best teachers are those who speak multiple languages, and we are very intentional to honor and support all types of students and teachers. If your teachers can speak and write in English and be understood by others, then they should be able to do well in the TESOL course.

Calendar

IMPORTANT DATES

  • Start together

If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. Your teachers can start taking the course at their own pace at any time of the year. However, most teachers will do better in the TESOL course if they can all start together. We also offer weekly webinars and other features to give you and your teachers additional support and learning opportunities.

  • Finish at your own pace

When TESOL students start the course, they can choose between different tracks. For example, the Fast Track gives them the option to finish in 12 weeks, and requires at least 10-15 hours of study per week, while the Extended Track allows teachers extra time to relax and finish the course at their own pace in under a year. Your teachers can take as much time as they need to finish the course! (We recommend giving them a minimum of 3-15 hours per week to participate in the course.)

  • Customize the schedule for your location

If you have language classes at your location during a particular time of year, we can help you recruit TESOL students to go and teach at your location during those dates. We can even show you how to host a full TESOL course at your location in a 'blended' or 'hybrid' format, where the TESOL students complete their coursework online using our learning platform while living and teaching at your location at the same time. (This is the easiest and most sustainable way to host TESOL courses at most locations.)

  • Schedule for upcoming sessions

OCTOBER 2022 SESSION: Classes for Module 1 are scheduled to begin on October 1st, 2022. HYBRID COHORTS: We will be offering in-person courses in Montana and Boston starting in April 2023, with additional courses planned for later in the year. (Anyone can join the Course Introduction to learn more and to get started right now, or send us a message for more details.)

"I’ve used these practical skills teaching in a traditional classroom, in a village, and online.”

A TEACHER'S STORY

One of my biggest takeaways from taking TESOL was learning how to lesson plan better, how to be more flexible in teaching, thinking of and using teaching resources, and managing a classroom well. Since my TESOL course, I continue to see the practical usefulness of these skills in all the teaching environments that I have been in—from the traditional-type classroom with a whiteboard, to teaching under a tree or a house in the village, or having to teach lessons online. It is this very practical nature of TESOL that I love so much and one of the big reasons why I would definitely recommend it to others! Also, I had awesome TESOL facilitators! — CASSIA, CLASS OF 2019
